About

Alexia Mellor is a creative, interdisciplinary thinker,  practitioner and researcher using playful and participatory strategies to investigate local responses to global issues. She asks questions around how we understand our sense of place in an increasingly globalized and digitally-mediated landscape, and how appropriating aspects of “global” culture might be repurposed to shed new light on the “local”. Mellor’s investigations include questioning how complex global issues such as climate change and emergent technologies like synthetic biology might be addressed at the local level.

Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including: ISEA2015 Dubai, Working Culture Residency at The NewBridge Project (UK), KunstVlaai Art Fair (Amsterdam), Mash-ups, Lake Forest College, Illinois (USA), New England Photography Biennial at the Danforth Museum of Art (USA), and at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (USA).In addition to her studio practice, Mellor organised and chaired MIND THE GAP, a multi-media and multi-platform art initiative and panel at ISEA2011 Istanbul.

In addition, Mellor has worked with a variety of stakeholders and clients ranging from local authorities, to businesses and museums on developing creative approaches to understanding local issues. She is pursuing a Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership/AHRC-funded studentship for her doctoral work at Newcastle University (2014-2018), where she is supervised by Dr. Venda Pollock, Professor John Bowers, and Dr. Fiona Whitehurst.

As part of her PhD, Mellor is currently on placement at Fab Lab Barcelona (September 2016-January 2017) working on participatory and engagement strategies for their Horizon 2020 project Making Sense.

She believes in unicorns.
