With the mission of spreading rainbows and glitter, The Unicorn Union creates playful interventions and temporary communities designed to make the world a better place. Gathering community members in common activities, the Unicorn Union investigates how we interact with, define and cope with our 21st century world. From redefining our relationship to place in Sweden, to creating safety devices to protect us from our fears in London and Amsterdam, The Unicorn Union is in the field fighting for you!

The first Unicorn Union intervention took place in Fengersfors, Sweden over the summer of 2012 as part of the Trans Europe Halles Network A-Team Project. In an effort to better understand what forms and bridges communities, Mellor served as artist-in-residence at the Not Quite artist collective. Here, Unicorn Union maps the collective and individual relationship to place. Meeting with members of the local community, Mellor discuses their relationship to Fengersfors: what brought them here, what is special about particular places, what memories they have. Linking these personal experiences to the physical space, the community places markers in the locations identified. A QR code on the marker will point the viewer to this website where the stories will be captured and shared, creating a virtual community that mirrors the physical one.
